Resistors

Definition :

A resistor is the most important electronic component in an electronic circuit, the most common use of it is to control voltage drop between two points [ As a voltage divider ] & and the current intensity and we measure it with a unit called Ohm Ω.

Common questions:

How Does resistor work?
- The resistor limits the flow of electrons, reducing current, The mathematical simulation to this is  Ohm`s law  V = I x R

How Does Resistor reduce the voltage and the current?
- The Resistor dissipates many watts of electrical power as heat which causes to reduce the voltage and the current through this relation P= I x V.

Resistors types:

There are two types of resistors

  • Fixed resistors
  • Variable resistors
 1- Fixed Resistors

Definition:
Fixed value resistors have a defined ohmic resistance and are not adjustable. Fixed resistors are the most commonly used resistors and in general one of the most used electronic components. Fixed resistors are available in axial leaded and surface mount packages as well as more customized packages depending on their application. While axial leaded resistors used to be the most used resistors, nowadays the advantages of surface mount devices make the SMD resistors the most popular.

Examples of general purpose fixed resistors:

  • Film Resistors
  • Jumper (Zero Ohm)
  • Aluminum Housed

  • Power Resistors
  • Network Resistors
  • Carbon Comp Resistors
  • Thick Film Resistors

Variable Resistor  VR

A variable resistor is a potentiometer with only two connecting wires instead of three. However, although the actual component is the same, it does a very different job. The pot allows us to control the potential passed through a circuit. The variable resistance lets us adjust the resistance between two points in a circuit.

Examples of general purpose Variable Resistor  VR:
  • linear variable resistors
  • rotary variable resistors
